Former tenant arrears

 door

Before you leave

When giving up your Council tenancy, you should ensure that your rent account is clear.  If you have rent arrears, your Housing Management Advisor will contact you during your 4 week notice period to discuss a repayment plan. If you are unable to clear your rent account, we will still expect you to re-pay your rent arrears after you have gone.

If you have rent arrears after you leave

After you have left, if your arrears are not being paid, we will write to you to request payment. If payments are not then made, the case will be referred to a Debt Collection Agency who will write and visit to recover the debt.  We will also consider legal action to recover any outstanding rent arrears, including deducting payments from your wages or benefits.

If you owe arrears from a former tenancy, this may prevent you from being re-housed by us or another landlord in the future.
