Demolition
In very rare circumstances it has, and may, become necessary to demolish housing stock. For instance, where properties are very old and/or undesirable and the cost of improvement is not economically viable.
It is important to stress that this never happens without the Council’s careful consideration and it always occurs after proper notice and consultation directly with those affected.
Where the demolition of nearby property may pose a risk to tenants in council property, the Council may offer alternative housing either temporarily or on a permanent basis. If a tenant does have to move, there are some matters that the tenant will still be responsible for, such as arranging for meter readings and disconnecting gas/electricity supplies, and for handing in the keys of the vacated property. However, advice and support is provided.
Where the demolition of nearby property causes disturbance to tenants in Council property, the Council may pay a disturbance allowance in compensation for the disruption while the demolition work is taking place.
If you are a Council tenant and have any concerns about any such issues, then please contact us.
