Protect against damp and condensation this winter (10-Nov-09)

Look out for the signs this winter

As the winter months approach your home may start to show signs of damp. Condensation and damp can cause mould on walls, and if left untreated may make timber and furniture rot. Damp and mould in homes can encourage the growth of mould and mites, and in some cases increase the risk of respiratory illnesses. The majority of mould is a consequence of excessive amounts of condensation.

What is condensation?

There is always moisture in the air, even if you cannot see it. If the air within your home gets colder it cannot contain all the moisture and tiny droplets of water appear. This is condensation. You may notice it when you see your breath on a cold day, or when the mirror mists over when you have a bath or shower. Condensation occurs mainly during cold weather and unlike other forms of dampness, it does not leave a `tidemark’. Condensation forms on cold surfaces and in places where there is little movement of air. Look for it in the corners of rooms, on or near windows and in or behind wardrobes and cupboards. Condensation very often forms on north-facing walls as direct sunlight is limited to these areas of the building.

What to do if you think you may experience damp or condensation problems.

There are a number of ways you can help yourself, including;

1. Produce less moisture For example: keep lids on pans when cooking, keep doors shut to kitchens and bathrooms when in use.

2. Ventilate to remove the moisture For example: Open windows and trickle vents when its safe to do, if extractor fans are fitted ensure they are utilised.

3. Heat your home a little more For example: In cold weather, the best way to keep rooms warm enough to avoid condensation is to keep low background heating on all day, even when there is no one at home.
