FAQ
Can I have a lodger to stay with me?

Secure tenants have the right to take in lodgers but Introductory tenants do not;

However:

  • This must not create overcrowding;
  • It may well reduce the amount of Housing Benefit you receive. If you are in receipt of Housing Benefit and you decide to take in a lodger, you should inform Ashfield District Council’s Revenues Section of your change of circumstances, who will re-assess how much benefit you are entitled to, based on the whole household;
  • Your lodger will not have security of tenure like you;
  • You will be responsible for legally evicting your lodger if you want him or her to leave, not Ashfield Homes;
  • You will be responsible for the behaviour of your lodger, under the terms and conditions of your Tenancy Agreement.
