If you live in a house or bungalow, you can keep without our written permission:
- One domestic dog, and/or
- One domestic cat, and/or
- One domestic caged bird and/or
- Fish and/or
- Two small caged pets for example gerbil hamster or rabbit
If you live in a house or bungalow, you will need to apply for permission to keep any pet other than, or in addition to the above.
If you live in a flat or in sheltered accommodation, you may not keep any pets without our permission.
If permission is granted for you to keep animals, this is usually conditional upon you looking after your pets properly and not allowing them to cause nuisance or annoyance to you neighbours, which can include excessive dog barking or failing to tidy up dog fouling. If you breach these conditions we may ask you to re-home your animals.
If you have a problem with your own dog barking, Ashfield District Council have a number of anti-bark collars which can be borrowed from the Council for a small deposit. The anti-bark collar helps modify the dogs behaviour by spraying citronella when the dog barks. For more information, to check availability or for advice on microchipping, low cost spaying and neutering please contact Ashfield District Council.
